Return to player is a share of turnover. A game set to 96% gives back 96 pence of every pound staked on it as prizes; the other four pence is the operator's revenue.
The word carrying the weight is every. The figure is not taken from your account, this month, or this casino. Two of those numbers describe a player as much as a game. Blackjack at 99.50% is the return when every decision is correct; played on hunches the same table gives back visibly less, and that gap exceeds the difference between most slots. Read the last column, not the third. Roulette at 97.30% and a slot at 96% look nearly identical as percentages, yet at the same stake the slot collects its margin about eighteen times as often per hour, because a reel resolves in two seconds and a wheel does not.
Why a Higher Return Can Feel Considerably Worse
Return to player is an average, and an average marks the centre of a spread rather than its typical point. Where very large results are rare but real, the average is held up by outcomes hardly anyone sees, and everybody else finishes below it. The middle result of a session therefore sits further beneath the published figure on a fierce game than on a gentle one. The percentage is honest; it is not the number describing your evening.
The second figure, and why it beats RTP over one night
Hit frequency is how often a round returns anything at all. It is published far less often and is not implied by the return: two games at the same percentage can pay on one spin in five or two in five, and they feel like different hobbies.
